The wrangles between the two leading presidential contenders to line up supporters are really something to see. If the incumbent district chairman supports one of the two contenders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], another leader aspiring to run for the next general election from the district supports the other contender. The two leading hopefuls, meanwhile, keep out of each other��s way as much as possible. That being so, there is no need to inquire further into their relationship.
People are sick and tired of the political infighting of the last four years. There was internal wrangling over the dispatch of our troops to Iraq, whether or not to abolish the National Security Law and the free trade agreement with the U.S. But nothing is easy with the GNP either. The party��s ideological divisions were evident in its caucus last week on North Korea policy. The so-called Young Turks argued for ditching the National Security Law and amending the constitutional provision that makes North Korea South Korean territory,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both of which are agendas of radical ruling-party lawmakers. Senior conservative legislators retorted,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Then fold the party signboard." During the past four years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Uri Party has spent all its time staring at Cheong Wa Dae. The ruling party is separate from the administration, they claimed. But in reality, the Uri Party has no less than its predecessors been a rubber stamp. Examples abound: attempts on the National Security law; the relocation of the capital,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], once judged unconstitutional; and the abortive grand coalition.

Nothing much would be different with the GNP. The presidential contenders are already pouring out public pledges that would cost trillions of won, without prior consultation with the party. Non-politicians who have joined the two leading contenders' camps openly complain of the qualifications of party insiders. It's evident that whichever presidential hopeful is nominated in the primary, the candidate��s camp would play the game without the party, and that if it comes to power, the GNP would be wholly subordinate to the presidential office.

The Uri Party, until a while ago, wielded its legislative right regardless of public opinion according to presidential instructions or swayed by party hardliners. A former party chairman once lamented, "It was wrong from the outset that the party was given the task of legislating the four laws�� -- on private schools, the press,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], history re-examinations and abolishing the National Security Law. Indications are that the GNP would if anything outdo Uri in this regard. A call to ban candlelight rallies and online searches of words related to the election by revising the election laws is clearly an unconstitutional idea and infringes on the freedoms of assembly and speech. The rejection of a revision to the National Pension Law in the recent extraordinary parliamentary session was a good example of populism from the right. It makes one dizzy to imagine what will happen if such a party assumes power.

Koreans can entrust it with the country only if the party completely alters its physical constitution and structure. The answer is not difficult to find: the party must do what the public have been asking the government to do over the past four years. And the GNP presidential contenders must lead the way.
