It becomes apparent as soon as we begin the process of releasing the residual tension we carry within us. Most of this tension is so deeply embedded that we are often unaware of its existence even though it hinders us. Generally it is because we never were, or cannot remember being without it. Hatha Yoga is more than simply relieving us from tensions that disturb us. It can release us completely from all patterns of holding, and stagnation down to the deepest, unconscious levels of our being.
Yoga affects the mind as much as the body. It improves concentration, increases alertness, precipitates perceptual and rational clarity, cultivates calmness, develops equanimity, instills confidence, and nourishes contentment. However, these benefits all depend on presence of mind during practice. It is essential that you approach your practice with sensitivity, and awareness. If done absentmindedly, or violently, it can reinforce this process further.
Yoga is a practical tool for untapping our hidden, and latent potential. It uses the five techniques of asana, vinyasa,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bandha, pranayama, and drushti to bring about a state of profound relaxation. This relaxed state is one of vibrant and alert harmony, in which all of the different aspects of our being are integrated, and accessible. It emerges once we are completely free from any residual tension.
How Yoga Works
Yoga enhances everything you do in life, on and off the court. And each day more people from all walks of life and for various reasons are turning to Yoga. I never would have believed it, but Yoga alone is an ideal form of exercise. Unlike other forms of fitness, Yoga offers the full range of fitness benefits, developing strength, stamina, flexibility,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and vitality. The gentle stretching action involved in each yoga posture promotes a gradual, safe increase in the flexibility of the whole body. Yoga boosts vitality, and enables recovery. Yoga has the ability to rejuvenate.
To release even one of these patterns takes time, and constant, consistent repetition. Most of us have restrictive patterns of habituated tension. These inhibitors are the result of past experience. Intrusive, threatening experiences evoke resistance. Generally we react to these intrusions by tightening, and hardening our bodies, and minds. It is our way of making the intrusion less painful. As tension begins to leave us, we have an epiphany. Something of great magnitude is revealed. This is that the body and mind cannot be functionally separated. What we find is that each area of physical resistance, (tension, stagnation, dullness, hardness, weakness, irritation) embodies an emotional pattern. This means that Asana can, and inevitably will, bring about an emotional release.
Unfortunately, the effect of the tightening, and resistance solidifies muscles, and other cells around the energetic impetus of the intrusion. It's important to learn to manage emotions. Now here is an important distinction for one might say, "It's important to control emotions." The word "control" gives the sentence a whole different meaning. Managing is flowing with emotions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whereas when you attempt to control emotions it's actually giving power to them over oneself. That is to say, what you try to control actually controls you.
The truth is that those suffereing from obesity (aside from those with a throid problem) don't have an eating problem or a weight problem. They have an eating symptom or a weight symptom. Just like a sneeze is a symptom,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the eating behavior or extra weigth is a symptom. Actually the problem they have is with emotions. From childhood they've associated food with pleasurable and unpleasurable emotions. Little wonder then when they feel happy they eat. Or when they feel upset or frustrated the eat. Eating is a conditioned behavior to many emotions. Trying to control food as a habit is like putting a square peg into a round hole--just impractable.
By embracing emotions and experiencing them, they no longer dictate eating behavior.
Change eating habit and change your life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Food has become a habit for millions of Americans. The latest obesity statistics are:
* 58 Million Overweight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; 40 Million Obese,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; 3 Million morbidly Obese
* Eight out of 10 over 25's Overweight
* 78% of American's not meeting basic activity level recommendations
* 25% completely Sedentary
* 76% increase in Type II diabetes in adults 30-40 yrs old since 1990
No wonder obesity has become a top seller. Many of the 58 million are desperately trying to lose weight. The most logical approach is to change eating habit. Obesity should disappear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Right,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
A progressive approach to losing weight involves asking important questions "What is missing here? Why are you not getting the results you've been promised?" It is clearly insane to keep attempting to change eating habit when the results are so poor. It's more important to gain a grasp on conquering emotional eating than it is to read the scale. Besides focusing on the scale doesn't empower you to be a better more enlightened person,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whereas learning about how to handle emotional eating empowers you in all aspects of your life. If you're a sales person, you'll be a better sales person. If you're an assembly line worker, you'll be a better assembly line worker. Overall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you'll build self worth and find that what you really want to eat is far more nutritious and less in quantity than you ever before imagined possible.
In the 1960's a lot of research was done with electroenclaphric biofeedback to see if by controlling certain brain waves, emotions could be controlled. The science never went beyond observing the brain waves associated with various emotions. It was ironic that some people while they were angry experienced the same brain waves as someone else who was happy. Ultimately, it was learned that it's impractical to control emotions by changing brain waves--something the sufi's of the East have known for centuries.

As children do this week after week, their ability to do this gets better and better.
HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO:
I am still looking for more people who are willing to try it out as an experiment and let me know their results. Following is a skeleton lesson plan that you can use to help guide you throughout the process,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Feel free to improvise and invent as you steer your children through one of the most amazing innovations in education,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Speed Spelling was first tried by Dr. Vearl G. McBride, Ph.D. over 30 years ago. In his book Damn the School System--Full Speed Ahead!, McBride gives a brief description of how he taught Speed Spelling (among some other Speed Subjects like Speed Math, Speed Languages, etc.) to young children to help them to learn hundreds of spelling words per week. (McBride’s rare book is now out of print, but if you would like a brief description of its contents, you can read the review of it that I posted on Amazon.com. [If you like the review, let Amazon.com know,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they appreciate the feedback]).
“This may continue like this for a couple of weeks until the child gets used to seeing the words. I have found that some children get scared and over-whelmed at starting out with so many words. Sometimes starting out slow helps but most of the time the way stated [above] works. It is still important that they not be concerned if they don't get it at first.
After sending the foregoing lesson plan to the homeschool mom (who teaches speed spelling) for her review,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she only had this to add:
DO YOU WISH TO GIVE IT A TRY WITH YOUR KIDS?
Some children have learned to spell up to 600 hundred words per week using speed reading techniques!
Reward them for their EFFORT, not on how well they did. If they are treated well, regardless of ability, they will get better results in the long run.

“Still use the colored marker but start on the dry erase board and in big letters start out with 3-5 words and let them study it for one minute. If the child stresses over writing the words on paper, then test them verbally.
Speed Spelling is one of several innovative uses for using speed reading methods to help teach particular school subjects to children.
Another way to review words is to just speed read in regular reading books for 15 minutes per day. As they come into daily contact with these words, they will never forget how to spell them.

words they can easily learn one hundred
words correctly with speed reading methods.”

By the end of the first week, you should start seeing some encouraging results. Some children may gain great results much sooner.
STEP 5:
Repeat this process for 4 or 5 days. Have them tell you the words and their spelling. Also, have them tell you how to spell them BACKWARDS! (yes they can do this too!).
At first make sure they don't try to gain any comprehension of the words. They are to just "see" the words for the first few minutes, using their "Natural Vision" like when they look out the window and see a tree.
STEP 3:
Have your child spend 5-15 minutes each day scanning over several pages of words, taking about 5-10 seconds to scan each page.
One good thing about this is, even if a child misses some of his words, he will still be learning 5-50 times more words than “normal” students do in a similar amount of time. Remember, most children only learn to spell about 20 words per week.
STEP 2:
Write about 20 words per page on blank pages of standard 8 1/2 by 11 inch computer paper. Write each word in large letters with a felt-tip marker, and write each word with different color marker ink. It is also important that each word NOT be written level nor in neat rows. Instead, make sure that each word is tilted at different angles than the other words. This, and the fact that they are written in different colors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], makes each of the words more likely to make an impression in a child’s brain.
“Do this kind of drill up to 3 times in a one hour period using 3-5 different words each time. Keep doing this throughout the week. Use the same words as the days before but keep adding 3-5 words each time.
STEP 6:
Get a new list of words and do it again! Also, review the previous lists regularly. This should only take a minute or so per day.

When they have scanned all the pages that you have prepared,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then have them go over these vocabulary pages again...and again...and again gradually allowing them to understand more and more,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], until the 15 minutes is up. Have them try to visualize the words and what they mean as they are going over them.

In the under-eights school phobia is usually attributed to separation anxiety - the child's unwillingness to be parted from a parent. In the over-eights it's usually about having uncomfortable feelings about school - this could be to do with friendships, fear of under-performing or a more general lack of self-esteem. In some cases home or family factors can play a role; for example, if there is an illness in the family, a recent divorce or if one parent is stressed or depressed.
The phobia can be triggered by general anxiety about school or a single traumatic event; a change of school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an embarrassing incident in class, a learning difficulty or returning to school after an illness are all recognized triggers. Symptoms can be physical as well as psychological. Children may suffer panic attacks, vomit or become withdrawn and socially phobic - real physical reactions to their unhappiness.
As a fun summer comes to an end, butterflies nerves fill the bellies of many children as they get dressed for their first day back to school. Parents assure their child that they will do “just fine.” For most children that's where the anxiety ends; they reach the classroom, catch up with their friends and get on with their day. Sunday-afternoon syndrome may set in - the child will become miserable, anxious and tearful as the school week approaches.
Once you've talked to your child, then talk to the school. Meet with the school counselor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], school psychologist or school social worker. Set up a meeting with one or all of these individuals and include at least one of your child’s teachers. Explore clues from home and school to determine how the child's needs are not being met. This is called Posterio-Lateral Breathing. Traditionally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this is a Pilates-style breathing technique. Your breathing goes into the back and sides of your ribcage.
Since the ribs are attached to the spine, if you start filling air at the bottom first – the ribs will elevate and separate as the air goes in. The result is that your inhale will pull each segment of the spine apart, providing more space between each joint, decompressing pressure on the spine.
I used to be a gymnast and dancer. I had this big arch in my lumbar spine in fact most of my back was in an arch, rather than 3 properly balanced curves. This unnatural long arch created strain on my lower back. As strong as my abs were, they were never strong enough, or could work hard enough for me to avoid back pain. And because my thoracic curve was in extension rather than in flexion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it restricted my breathing making me a very shallow high-chest breather.
Any deviations from the three natural curves, balanced,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and changing directions at the right points and you will have a greater risk of suffering from back pain and neck pain.
1. Lumbar Curve – An arch in the lower back. (Ideally with the apex of the arch at L3 –the belly button.)
2. Thoracic Curve – A rounded,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], flexed upper back. (The curve of the shoulder blades rests on the curve of the ribcage that is attached to the curve of the spine.)
3. Cervical Curve – An arch in the neck. (Which mirrors the arch in the Lumbar spine.)
If the air goes into the belly when you inhale – there is no support in the front of your Lumbar Curve. This puts more stress on your lower back. Your back may be arching more on your inhale causing your back bones to come closer, producing compression instead of decompression when you inhale AND even more compression when you exhale. Your spine is suffering!
This posterio-lateral Pilates breathing technique is a must-have breathing habit for every-day health. Making some changes in your breathing habits probably won’t happen overnight! Practice consciously being aware of your breathing habits every day. Make an effort to apply this technique even just with 5-10 breaths, once or twice a day to give as much attention as possible to the lengthening of your spine, maintaining good belly support,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with relaxed shoulders, and the feeling of your head and neck floating up tall. Gradually, you will notice that you are doing this automatically without thinking about all the little things needed for great breathing habits.
“Breathing elongates the natural curves of the spine.”
Knowing how to elongate the natural curves of your spine on every inhalation that you do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and sustaining good core support during exhalation, will definitely help you improve your posture and enjoy a much healthier neck and back.
If any of the first three of these occur as you inhale: tightened neck muscles, elevated shoulders, head closer to your torso as you breathe in – you are jamming your head into your body with every breath!
This is a really important principle in learning to let the breath assist the body for better posture and functional movement.
If the air goes into your chest when you inhale – you are extending more your Thoracic Curve, your whole back is probably arching more. The result: more tension in your mid-to-lower back and a reduced ability to fill your lungs with air. Your breathing will be fast and shallow, with over-worked back muscles, and abdominals not functioning well enough to give you more balance and support. Your shoulders will likely elevate increasing tension in the neck and shoulders, and your head will probably be out of balance with the rest of the spine.
• Do you see muscles in the front of the neck grip and stiffen as you inhale?
• Do your shoulders rise up around your ears as you inhale?
• Does your head get closer to your shoulders when you take in air?
• Or do you feel your neck and head lifting and lengthening up and away from your shoulders?
Any posture that does not “Ride the Breath” to extend the natural curves of the spine during inhalation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and permits the back bone to constrict closer together during exhalation, is not gaining the benefits from functional breathing habits for improved health.

What Are Your Breathing Habits?

These three curves help in maintaining balance and serve as shock-absorbers as we move, sit, stand, walk, and run.
With these posture problems, I experienced chronic low back pain, chronic neck pain, and my shoulders were up around my ears most of the time. Usually by Friday afternoons, I had a terrible headache from trying to hold things together with tense, stiff muscles holding my posture from the wrong places. In addition, I also suffered a voice injury – due to poor posture and breathing habits. I was holding my head forward on my neck, which restricted free-flowing air through my windpipe. And I’m not an isolated case…there are a lot of people out there who exhibit similar posture habits!

We breathe to keep us alive, but oftentimes we take our breathing habits for granted. Breathing is normally on autopilot. We take in air the moment we are born, and the last thing we do is exhale when we die. Every second of the day of our entire life, our heart pumps life’s blood through our system, and our lungs and diaphragm work together to provide nourishing oxygen to our blood and cells to help keep us alive.
My Poor Posture Story:
To help lift and lengthen the neck and head up for better posture as you inhale, drop or pull the shoulders down from the bottom tips of your shoulder blades. The shoulders pulling down make a great anchor point to control lifting and elongating your spine during both inhalation and exhalation. You might even notice a stretch in your neck if it’s stiff. By keeping your head up, floating and lifting at the top of your spine, and relaxing your shoulders and neck muscles down, you can experience a major reduction in neck pain. When I figured this out for my neck, breathing, and posture habits all those Friday afternoon headaches totally vanished!

Now, I'm not here to promote Panamá—though if you want to talk about that I'll be glad to, because I've got a lot of good reasons for living there—but that's not what I'm talking about.

An old Zen story tells that you must empty your cup before you can achieve something new. This applies also to your life situation.
You must dare to give away in order to make room for something else to replace it.
If you have a garage filled with old car tires, an old furniture, or stuff you did not use for a long time then give it away.

Doing Better Than They Think But There Is Room For Improvement…,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]

So how are they doing? Not bad. Not bad at all. For two people who have never lived together before, Marta and Maria have managed to figure out a way to make it work. Instead of working against each other’s weaknesses, they compensate for each other. Heck, some married couples could learn from these two! But before we give them a freshman-student-living-together-harmoniously-award,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], let’s focus on what can be improved.
Two such young women decided to work with a professional organizer and life coach, hoping to not only improve their living situation, but their overall lives and habits as well. Let their experience serve as an inspiration to all roommates, college or otherwise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who find themselves living in close quarters with a person they’ve never shared a space with before.
When I first visited Marta and Maria, I was struck by how small their dorm room is, but isn’t that par for the course in college? What separates organizing a college dorm room from a traditional house bedroom is that the college dorm room must function as a lot more than just a place to sleep. If you split the dorm room into zones,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you realize how multi-functional the space must be. There is the sleeping zone (bed and dresser), the dressing zone (armoire style closets), the food zone (mini-refrigerator and dry food storage), the studying zone (desk and bookshelf), and the hanging out zone (television and chair). That is an awful lot of stuff to cram into one space, but then you also need to double almost everything in order to accommodate two people. It’s no wonder college students are often disorganized – there’s too much stuff in one little space!
Another design flaw of the room organization is that the dry food and cooking supplies are stored on the sole shelving unit across the room from the small fridge. I recommended moving the food and cooking supplies to an open area next to the fridge, which is now unused space. It is a narrow space but there is a lot of room vertically. Often times, vertical space is sorely underutilized and can provide the answer to a storage problem. So we used a narrow, but tall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], clear plastic drawer unit with 5 smaller drawers on top, and 2 deep drawers on the bottom. All of the food easily fit in, as well as the few cooking supplies. Now, they have an actual “food zone.” An additional advantage to this reorganization is that it freed up the shelves where the food used to be for storing things like videos, CDs, photo albums, and their toiletry carts (the bathrooms are down the hall, which means carrying toiletries back and forth). We stored those items in pretty open wicker baskets of varying sizes with removable cotton muslin lining for ease of cleaning. The design provides easy access as the baskets are open, and add charm to the space. We used a matching, but smaller, wicker basket to store extra videos that they watch more frequently on top of the television.

As for Maria and her laundry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I recommended setting aside one night per week after soccer practice as “laundry night”. Using positive association, I offered up Thursday night as she can put in her laundry before Friends begins, watch the half hour episode, and then switch the clothes to the dryer. She can then take an hour or so to check and reply to e-mail, and then fold the clothes while listening to she and Marta’s favorite radio show, the Delilah show (which they bonded over when they first moved in together and realized they were both huge fans) while winding down before bed. Using positive association will help Maria not dread laundry, but instead think of it in association with fun television shows, e-mailing friends and family, and winding down with music and perhaps a chat with Marta. Having her laundry done every week will also avoid the pile up that stresses her out and causes her to run out of clothing. She gave this a try and said it did help somewhat. I reminded her that it takes time to make new habits, so she plans to keep at it. I have no doubt she will improve her laundry situation as she is motivated to change this behavior, despite her tendencies towards procrastination.
Maria is a self-professed procrastinator. She likes things clean but let’s the chores go until she cannot stand it anymore (sound familiar, all you procrastinators out there?). In fact, she will let her laundry pile up until she runs out of undies (if she runs out of clothing such as sweatshirts, however, she often steals Marta’s!). She admits that this stresses her out and she’d like to “change her ways.” Marta does more of the general straightening of the room on a daily basis, while Maria actually does more of the cleaning, such as sweeping and mopping the floors. Neither really likes to or has time to cook, so they usually eat in the cafeteria, but they do keep some food staples in their room (although not near the fridge, but we’ll get to that later).

The actual room set up and design is working. However, Marta and Maria have a huge bean bag chair in the middle of their room. When asked if either ever really sit on it, the answer is once in awhile. Do guests sit on it? Sometimes. How often do they have guests? Not that often. Thus, we discussed storing the chair under Maria’s bed where there was adequate space. That would give a sense of openness to the small room. When guests drop by, they can just take beanie out from under the bed. Interestingly, once we discussed moving the bean bag chair from its precious center room location, the two confided during a later visit that they have been using it more often! Sometimes, when faced with the prospect of purging or relocating an item, a person realizes its value and begins to appreciate it and use it. At least now, however, when it is not being used, it has a “home” to go to that is a bit more out of the way.
Marta and Maria plan to continue living together as roommates in their sophomore year. They already heard that they are moving to a different dorm. Their actual room will be smaller (yikes!), but it will be part of a suite with another room for two other students, and a common living room and bathroom for all four to share. I have no doubt that they will make the smaller space work, and I plan to check in on them to see whether they have been able to maintain the organized systems we put in place. And when I do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I imagine they will whip out the bean bag chair from under the bed for me to sit on. After all, I may be their professional organizer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I am also their guest.
Marta and Maria found out they were each other’s roommates about one week prior to heading to college. They had never met before. In many respects,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Marta and Maria have a lot in common. Both entered Pace University as freshman and reside on the Briarcliff, New York campus, in the suburbs of New York City. Both attend Pace on a soccer scholarship, are interested in pursuing a career in human services, maintain good grades, and consider themselves family oriented. Yet, there are many differences between the two young women. Marta not only plays soccer for Pace, but also basketball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which forces her to engage in some serious time management. Marta’s family lives within an hour’s drive from campus, which means being able to head home every two weeks to do laundry. Maria isn’t so lucky, as her family resides in Nashville, Tennessee. Maria shared a room back home with her older sister, while Marta never had to share her space before. Although in the same year of college, they are almost an entire year apart. Most importantly, however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is the fact that the two have very different habits when it comes to organizing and maintaining their space and lives.
What Does the Future Hold?
The clothes inside their small armoire closets are pretty well organized. However, their shoes are actually on top of their armoires. They claim they can easily see and reach the shoes up there, and they do not want them in the bottom of the closets so the shoes can air out properly after use (remember we are talking athletes here…). One thing organizers know to do is to work “with” the client,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so we left the shoes up there as the system works for them.
It is difficult enough for one person to be organized and maintain that state of organization on a daily basis. Now imagine being thrust into a living situation with a person you have never met before, who is not a relative or even a friend. A person with different sleeping, grooming, eating, and studying habits, who may be from a different background or culture, and who has a different schedule and interests to boot. Enter the college roommate. When described in the abstract, the college roommate situation reads like a recipe for disaster. Yet, thousands of college students manage to live successfully and harmoniously every year with a roommate who, just days before the beginning of the semester, they had no contact with. Often times, this exercise in living is a wonderful entrance into the "real world" for college students and can serve as an example of the importance of compromise and flexibility that will serve the student in years to come.

Keep it brief. Remember the length of the elevator speech should be about the same amount time it would take to ride in an elevator from the top floor of the building to the bottom. Create and practice your elevator speech in advance. Use the time you drive to work to go over your material a few times each week. Have several different versions of your presentation. Each situation is different. Being prepared for a different approach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], depending on the situation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is extremely valuable. Make your speech memorable. Give your listener one piece of information that he/she will not forget. Mention why your product or service is better than that of your competition. Ask for a business card. The next day send an email and give another piece of information that was not covered previously. Be passionate about your topic. Your enthusiasm will ignite your listener’s interest. Talk to the individual just as if you were having a conversation in your living room. Smile.

Get side-tracked. Stick to the basic information that you have prepared in advance. Push. A little gentle urging is one thing but avoid the hard sell. Sound rote or memorized. The last thing your listener wants is a memorized sales pitch. Talk just about yourself. Good selling means good listening skills as well. Pay attention to the other person’s needs. Use technical language that the average person would not understand. Forget to give one of your own business cards. He/she may not need your service or your product at the moment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but may be more than appreciative of your name and number weeks or months down the road. Keep on speaking if you can clearly see that your listener is not interested. Expect everyone you meet to be interested in what you have to say. Some will; some won’t.

It will always be the next vibration up in scale.
